Helping Hands
Newton County Elementary Fourth Grade Teacher Jon’Marie Tune and NCES Kindergarten Teacher Beth Lang joined their classes to participate in a meaningful learning experience centered around the read-aloud “Keepunumuk: Weeâchumun’s Thanksgiving Story”. As the story was shared, fourth graders helped lead the conversation by making connections to their ongoing study of Native American cultures and their novel, “The Birchbark House”. They discussed themes such as gratitude, community, resilience, and the deep relationship Indigenous tribes have with nature. Following the read-aloud, both grades participated in the Giving Hands activity. Each handprint represented things students could do in order to show acts of kindness, pictured are partners, Fourth Grader Maison Caraway and Kindergartener Jasper Loper. The “Helping Hands” Wreath was created and now hangs in the classroom as a reminder during this holiday season.
