Algebra Nation, a state-funded math program that is free for students, schools, and teachers in Mississippi, awarded Newton County 9th-grade student Ellie Winter an iPad for her exemplary work in helping her peers across the state succeed in Algebra I. Algebra Nation presented the award on Friday, November 16th at the school.
“I am very proud of Ellie for working so hard to win this award,” Newton County Algebra 1 teacher Wynter Bounds said in a news release. “When Alexis Tran won the iPad last month from Algebra Nation, Ellie set a goal to win for October and she did!”
Ellie earned the most ‘Karma Points’ in MS for the month of October. When she is not helping other students with Algebra, Ellie likes to hang out with her friends. Alexis Tran, last month’s iPad winner, was a Top 5 Karma Point winner again for October.
Karma Points are earned whenever a student helps another student on the statewide Algebra Wall – such as directing them to an appropriate video to address their question, explaining how to start solving a math problem, or by showing their peers where they’ve made an error. Each month, the student who earns the most Karma Points in the state receives a free iPad, and the students who place 2nd-5th receive prize packs with Algebra Nation T-shirts, pencils and stickers. For example, Ellie wrote the following post on the Algebra Wall that was awarded Karma Points: “To find the highest degree you just have to determine which degree is the highest out of all the terms of the polynomial”.
Algebra Nation is a free online resource with accompanying workbook, built for students and teachers in MS by MS teachers. The program provides around-the-clock support to more than 35,000 math students, with a personalized learning program of 24/7 homework help from Study Experts, teachers, and peers.
