This week’s article continues the Union High School senior spotlights. This individual has only attended UHS for two years, but has accomplished and learned so much. Benjamin Shelton, better known as Ben, reflects on his UHS career.
He has taken multiple Dual Credit classes that UHS offers. In fact, Ben says that some of his favorite high school memories actually come from his favorite dual credit class: “My favorite class would have to be Comp. Technically that’s two classes, but I’m counting them as one. I won’t say I had the most fun in that class, but I’m sure it’s the class I got the most out of. I don’t think I quite realized how much I loved words before I took that class.” Dual Credit Composition I and II requires students to put in a tremendous amount of work and effort in order to achieve success in the class. When students leave the class, they understand the importance of literature and know how to write professionally with intent to convey a message.
Kallie and I asked Ben other questions about his time at UHS. We asked Ben if he had any regrets. Ben replied by saying, “I do regret not being involved in school more than I was. Even now I’m not quite sure what I could have done to be more involved, but I wish I had done something. But I’m still very glad to have been a part of the school in the small ways that I was.” Ben’s words of encouragement for younger students are unique but powerful: “Carpe diem.”
When asked how he feels about leaving, Ben states, “I don’t think there’s any part of me that really feels glad to leave Union High School for good. I’ve always looked forward to breaks from school, but leaving behind UHS for good just seems like a whole different thing. I guess since I’ve only been here for my last two years of high school I just haven’t had enough time to get tired of it. Really, though, I’ll miss this school a lot.”
While Ben’s high school experience comes to a close, he looks forward to his next chapter. He plans to attend East Central Community College. Ben does not know what he wants to major in, but he is thinking about computer science. Whatever Ben Shelton decides, he will impact the world in many ways.
