Demond Larkin is the focus for this week’s senior spotlight. Demond reflects on his high school career by sharing advice, memories, and lessons. Demond participated in FCA and HOSA. He also served as the local president for the BETA club.
When looking back, Demond wishes he would have interacted with many people: “If I could, I would go back and sit with other students at different tables. That way I could get to know more people.” When asked what younger students should know and implement into their own lives, Demond responds by telling students to take harder classes in high school.
Taking Advanced Placement and Dual Credit Courses allow students to dive deep into topics and earn college credits. Demond adds that taking the harder courses with teachers students already know and trust sets them up for success. In fact, Demond shares that one of his favorite teachers taught him in Dual Credit Courses. Demond says, “Mrs. Clancy Bridges has been the biggest influence on my education.
From the start of high school, I had no expectation of working hard, but Mrs. Bridges pushed me to do my best.” Additionally, Demond comments on what high school has taught him and how he changed. Demond explains that school taught him many valuable lessons that he will take with him to college and beyond: “School taught me to take every opportunity given to me. Without taking these opportunities God gave me, I would not be where I am today.” Kallie and I asked Demond how he has changed over the course of high school. Demond replied, “I changed from wanting to do the bare minimum to being the best student I can possibly be.”
The teachers, students, and experiences from Union Public School District allowed Demond Larkin to grow into the best version of himself. Demond explains that leaving UHS will be sad, but he is also excited for the next part of his life. Demond plans to attend Mississippi State University to study Pre Med or Law. Demond is also planning to study abroad in Italy. Whatever Demond Larkin decides to pursue, he will be successful.
