As graduation approaches for UHS seniors, Rileigh and I are featuring another senior, Jacob Smith. Jacob plans to attend East Central Community College after graduation, where he will begin his journey toward becoming a game warden—a career path that blends his love of the outdoors with a commitment to conservation. After college, Jacob hopes to land a position with Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries, turning his passion into a lifelong career.
During his years at Union High School, Jacob stayed active both in and out of the classroom. He proudly participated on the UHS baseball team and played the BariSax in the Pride of Union Marching Band throughout his entire high school career and says he’s equally proud of his contributions to both. "Playing baseball and being in the band have been some of my favorite experiences—I’ll always remember those moments," he shared. When reflecting on what he might have done differently, Jacob humbly admits, “I could have tried harder on my studies.” But it’s that self-awareness that shows how much he’s grown. “High school taught me many important lessons, and I’ll use all of them to better myself,” he said.
Jacob credits Mrs. Reynoldswith having the biggest impact on both his education and personal growth. He jokingly reveals that, “She taught me more English than I thought I could learn.” When asked about the hardest part of high school, Jacob didn’t hesitate: “Eating the food.” But he’s quick to note his favorite cafeteria item—cookies—which, he says, made things a little more bearable.
As graduation nears, Jacob describes his feelings as bittersweet. “It’s strange knowing I’m leaving a place that’s been such a big part of my life, but I’m excited about what comes next.” Jacob Smith embodies what it means to be a Union High School Yellowjacket. We wish the best of luck to Jacob Smith!
