BASKETBALL: Union girls win region, will host today

The Union girls will start their quest to make it back to Jackson this week.

The Lady Yellowjackets started the playoffs by winning the Region 5-3A playoffs, beating Enterprise 48-36 in the semifinals and Forest 33-31 in the finals.

The Union boys lost to Clarkdale in the first round, falling 55-33.

BASKETBALL: Buzzer beater sends NCA girls to state tournament

The Newton County Academy Lady Generals got a buzzer-beating basket from Lilly Hollingsworth to secure a place in the Class 3A state tournament.

Hollingsworth’s basket led the Lady Generals to a 60-59 win over Desoto Academy on Wednesday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Newton County girls rally to defeat Quitman in OT, clinch region title

In his 16 years as girls basketball coach at Newton County, Cory Cleveland has been close to a division championship on several occasions.

On Friday night, the Lady Cougars gave Cleveland his first Regional 5-4A tournament championship with a 56-50 win over Quitman.
