Eddwin Smith has been hired as the new principal at Newton High School.
He was recently approved by the Newton Municipal School District Board upon the recommendation of Superintendent Glenda Nickson.
Smith will be replacing Shernise Wilson, who has led Newton High School for the past five years.
Smith, native of Port Gibson, has over 20 years of experience in education. He has served as a classroom teacher, assistant principal and principal. Throughout the years, Smith has helped his schools see improvements in test scores, student/teacher attendance, graduation rates and teacher retention.
“I am excited about this new endeavor, because I will have the opportunity to help more students experience greatness,” Smith said in a statement released by NMSD. “I simply request the patience, consideration, and cooperation of the community as we strive to make a difference in the lives of our students as well as the community."
