Lady Cougars can’t rally from 2-0 first-half deficit
The soccer season came to an abrupt end for both the boys and girls teams at Newton County last week.
The Cougars lost in the opening round of the Class 4A playoffs to Ripley on Tuesday in dramatic fashion.
The game was tied at 1-1 for much of the contest and eventually went into overtime. Christian Valazquez scored Newton County’s only goal in the game.
The Cougars had a chance to win late with the ball deep in their own territory but had several shots denied. Ripley then got the ball and raced down the field and hit the game winner as time expired in the overtime period.
The Cougars, who played for the Class 4A state championship last year, finished the season with a 13-5-1 record.
Last year, Newton County beat Ripley 3-2 in dramatic fashion to advance to the championship game.

The Lady Cougars also lost a tough game this past week, falling to Mooreville 2-1 o Saturday in the second round of the playoffs.
Kaylee Avant scored Newton County’s only goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 65th minute.
The game was 1-0 when Mooreville scored in the 39th minute and halftime was called immediately after Newton County tapped the ball into play.
Newton County finishes the season with a 10-10 record.
Newton County beat New Albany to advance to the second round. In that game, Avant scored two goals while Emma Claire Thornton also had a goal. Morgan Massey also had an assist in the game.
