We need to get together.
You make the cornbread and black-eyed peas, and I’ll make ... fast work of it.
Well, we all have to do our part, right?
How about getting together at the river, instead?
On Saturday, Oct. 21, beginning at 11 a.m., “We Shall Gather at the River” will take place. It’s the annual fall Bluegrass Gospel Singing on the River.
Planned entertainers are Tyler Carroll and the PineRidge Bluegrass, Andy Linton Family, Gary Thorne and Friends and The Pilgrim Family. Also this year the Ragger Roos, a wash tub comedy act from Raymond will be there.
Bring a lawn chair and an appetite. Hamburgers, sausage dogs, cold soft drinks and bread pudding will be available.
I might be willing to trade some peas and cornbread for that.
If you need more info or want to see if camp sites are still available, call 601-480-3045.
Besides good food and good music, when I get together when friends and family I love sharing stories. You know, things we used to do and got away with (or not) and things we
can’t do anymore because we got old can’t run like we used to or because of caller I’D.
Nevermind.
I love talking about history, especially when it’s related to places I love. “Remember when ... Chunky and Hickory, Mississippi” is a great Facebook group for people like me, and has great photos and stories people share about our area and its history.
You should take a look.
One more thing — congrats to the alma mater ofmy sister and my younger son: Newton County High School. The Lady Cougars advanced this past weekend to the softball state playoff quarterfinals by twice solidly beating the Lawrence County Lady Cougars.
By the time you read this, they may have beaten the Wesson Lady Cobras and be one of the last four teams in the championship race. Either way, they’ve played hard and accomplished a lot. Way to go, ladies!
As always, please let me know what’s going on in your neck of the Chunky woods. Or elbow, wherever you live. Be kind to your neighbors, and get together more often. Maybe I can talk my wife into making the cornbread.
