Silence is broken by the sharp crack of the radio. A call comes over. A field is on fire and the house is in danger. Or a car has left the highway and overturned. Or a grandfather passed out in the garden, and his breathing is ragged.
Men and women, volunteers all, grab necessary gear and load up in emergency or personal vehicles and rush to aid. Their movements are quick, concise, practiced, efficient.
Because of their skills, their responsiveness and their willingness to serve, only a field is blackened. A driver escapes with her life. A grandfather gets the medical help he didn’t know he needed.
But things could have been worse. Especially if there was no one to respond or the necessary equipment to do the job well was unavailable.
I am incredibly grateful to the volunteers of Chunky Volunteer Fire Department. My family is blessed because of them. Yours is, too, even if you’ve never had to call upon their services. Because they are there we are ultimately safer.
But needed equipment and training costs money. Items wear out or need to be upgraded according to law.
So CVFD is asking for your help. The final Saturday of next month, July 28, the department will host its first Craft Sale Day from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Chunky baseball diamond. Spaces for 100 vendors are planned and there’s still time to register as a vendor. Just visit the CVFD Facebook page for details.
Whether you’re a vendor or a shopper, plan to be there. Show your support for the people who serve our community year-round.
They’ll thank you for it.
And we thank them.
