October is a month full of designations.
It’s Heritage Month for Italian-Americans, German-Americans and Polish-Americans.
It’s the food month for cheese, caramel, chili, dessert, pasta, pizza, pretzels, sausage and whatever it is vegetarians eat. It’s also pickled peppers month, so if your name’s Peter Piper, perk up and pick a peck.
October is the also the month designated to highlight some more serious issues. It serves as the “awareness month” for Domestic Violence, AIDS, Blindness, Breast Cancer, Down Syndrome, Fungal Diseases, ADHD, Bullying Prevention, Dental Hygiene Depression, Infant Loss, Hearing, Spina Bifida and Rett Syndrome.
It will also play host to Halloween and – more importantly than that – my 49th birthday.
But the month of October is also host to a few noteworthy events in the town of Chunky.
Saturday the 12th will be the Chunky-Wide Community Yard Sale, all across the town, as well as the Chunky Craft Fair at the ball field. Go ahead and get your cash set aside for all the great deals you’re bound to find at the field and all up and down the roads and streets of Chunky. Do yourself and your neighbors a favor, though, and get some small bills. It makes everything easier.
Just a week later – Saturday the 19th – will be the ninth Chunky River Recreation Bluegrass Gospel Singing on the River, beginning at 11 a.m. There’s no admission fee, but donations will be accepted. Featured performers are Alan Sibley and the Magnolia Ramblers, The Pilgrim Family Bluegrass and Answered Prayer Gospel Band. Go ahead and plan to stay for the second annual “Boss” Toss Cornhole Tournament at 3:30 p.m. (after the singing is over). Cost is $10 per team. First and second place prizes will be awarded.
Concessions will be available, but you should bring a lawn chair. If you need more information, call 601-480-3045.
The very next day, Chunky Baptist Church will celebrate its 125th anniversary with worship at 10 a.m. Dr. Jim Futral, a familiar face and voice to many, will be the guest speaker. If you haven’t heard Futral speak, do yourself a favor and visit CBC that morning. A potluck meal and fellowship will follow the service.
Lazy Acres Farm’s Pumpkin Patch is open now, also. Open Fridays through Sundays, they have special events scheduled every weekend in the month. The first weekend in October, an illusionist and some pigs will help celebrate at Banjo’s Birthday Party. The following weekend – when you’re taking a break from yard sale-ing and craft fairing – head up north for Touch a Tractor, Touch an Animal Weekend. The 19th and 20th is Pick’N at the Patch and the final weekend will close out the harvest season with a Cystic Fibrosis Glow Run and a fireworks display. Check the farm’s website for times and costs.
Whew. I’m tired now.
Enjoy October! There’s lots to do here around town, plenty of causes to support and foods to enjoy. Just a few notes to leave you with: (1) Remember, if you decorate for Halloween, that all public displays can be seen by small children, too. Please don’t get too carried away; (2) I know what vegetarians eat. No need to educate me; and (3) If you text me, I’ll give you my mailing address for any and all birthday gifts of books, coffee, pocket knives, cigars or cash.
