Excitement. Nervousness. Hope. Christmas has passed, and Union now prepares for the beginning of a new decade—the 2020s. People born during 2000 will turn twenty, and 1990 will be thirty years ago. Over the past decade, the world has changed exponentially. Changes range from many technological advancements to improvements to the economy. The 2020s will change the world even more. Members of Generation X will begin to retire and become grandparents. Millennials will become the dominant generation in the workforce, and members of Generation Z will start their careers and have children. Many hold anxieties about 2020 while others can barely contain their excitement.
Over the past decade, many important things have happened across the world. The United States recovered from the Great Recession of 2008, and the election of 2016 ushered in a new president. At the local level, Union Public Schools created vocational programs, gained statewide attention for their band program, sent two students to ivy league universities and improved local education tenfold. Millennials began their careers as well. Several Union graduates returned to the school to teach. Technological developments have also impacted Union residents over the past decade. Smartphones have been refined, cars have become rolling computers and internet services have been extremely improved. Despite all of the good things, some bad things have happened as well. Relatives have died, and many people have found themselves in bad situations. Unfortunately, this is the nature of life, and people must reflect on their bad decisions as well as their good ones.
As the 2020s approach, many people cannot contain their excitement for the new decade. They will start their careers, start their families and start to make their mark on the world. Members of Generation X will begin to retire and become grandparents. Millennials will be advancing their careers and raising children. Members of Generation Z will launch their careers and start families. Many people will travel and start to live their dreams. Despite many people’s excitement at the new decade, others express feelings of nervousness and fear at the unknown. What will the future hold? What will become of the United States? What will become of Union? These questions and feelings are all justified, but with the coming of the new decade, the potential for great good definitely exists.
2020 approaches extremely quickly. The next decade will produce the next generation of teachers, doctors, lawyers, world leaders and all other kinds of people. Despite some feelings of anxiety, time will still pass, and the 2020s will begin when the ball drops at midnight in New York City. People should reflect on their choices over not only the past year but the entire decade. 2020 represents a new beginning for any looking to start over or change their lives, and the new decade should be one of prosperity for all. Despite how much one wants to stop the flow of time, that power belongs to no one; therefore, everyone should strive to do their best in the coming years. Everyone should make the best of the decade that comes, and Union will be ready for the challenges of the 2020s.
