The blue lights on the hill were beautiful as we drove down Lazy Acres Road on Thanksgiving evening. The Christmas tree farm had been open a few hours already, but cars were still steadily pulling into the drive as families were on their quest for the perfect evergreen.
Some are continuing an old tradition. Some are starting a new one. There’s nothing quite like the experience of picking out and felling your own tree for the holiday. And that evergreen scent ... You may love to use artificial trees instead of real ones, or may forego trees altogether. That’s your choice.
My wife owns seven artificial trees. No, that’s not a typo. And yes, they’re hers. Not ours. And we live in an apartment. So, six are in storage.
In the interest of full disclosure, however, I must admit that I own seven coffee makers.
Two are not in storage. Maybe I have eight.
We have strange addictions.
One year when my sons were 4 and 2-years-old, I was a student and we were incredibly poor, we didn’t have one. A tree, not a coffee maker.
My wife suggested I draw a tree in dry-erase marker on the side of our refrigerator. Easy up, takes up no space, easy to dispose of and we could decorate it with fridge magnets. The boys loved it. It was the easiest tree ever.
But cleanup didn’t go so smoothly. Apparently dry-erase ink becomes a semi-permanent part of a white appliance after a month. Talk about an evergreen.
Whatever you choose to do to decorate or celebrate this Christmas, do it with a heart of joy. And if you’re getting a live tree this year, Lazy Acres Plantation is a great place to do it.
And the lights are beautiful after dark.
