Every year during the fall semester, high schools and colleges across the United States celebrate homecoming. Alumni are invited to return each year to celebrate homecoming festivities at the homecoming football game. Many alumni of all ages return to their alma mater for this event. Last week, Union High School celebrated homecoming festivities in several different ways. Students always look forward to homecoming from the beginning of the semester, and the festivities always serve to unite the community.
Homecoming festivities involve a number of different traditions for students to participate in. The first and most visible of these is the homecoming court. A few weeks before homecoming week, the student body nominates several girls from each grade to serve on the homecoming court. The 2019 homecoming court consisted of Britley Milling, Trinity Lambert, McKenlee McDaniel, Gianna Esposito, Lexie Pullin, Kayleigh Vance, Kenley Pullin, Shyne Wheeler and Natalie Burns. Another time-honored homecoming tradition is the homecoming parade. The homecoming parade also featured the homecoming court, the Union High School Band and many of the other school organizations.
Another tradition that students look forward to are the homecoming spirit days. During homecoming week, the school allowed students to dress up for various dress-up days. For the 2019 homecoming, students dressed up for class color day, jock versus nerd day, throwback day, superhero versus villain and spirit day. Students always look forward to these days each year as they provide some variety to the everyday routine. A newer tradition has also been started by the Union Public School District’s Facebook page. Union High School alumni have been honored for their achievements during the week. The homecoming football ended the week Friday night when Union High School played against Eupora. The Union High School Band also gave their first performance of their 2019 show. Homecoming traditions are extremely important for Union High School and the community.
Homecoming festivities united both the young and old. They gave both alumni and current high school students something in common. They both shared the same school and the same love for that school. Many alumni returned for the homecoming football game, and some reunited with their old classmates. The community always unites during homecoming week as seen during the turnout for the parade and the football game. Union High School’s many traditions also brought most of the student body together; anyone and everyone can dress up during the dress up days to participate.
Union High School just celebrated their 2019 homecoming and brought the community together. They will always continue to do so, and people will always know the importance of our local school.
