MSU Extension Service offers “Forestland as an Investment” courses
The MSU Extension Service will be offering a short course covering all aspects of timberland ownership and management on five consecutive Tuesdays (Sept. 11, 18, 25 and Oct. 2) from 6-8 p.m. This program is designed for landowners, foresters, or others considering investing in land and timber. Cost is $30 per person, $40 per couple for materials and dinner on the last evening.

Generals Salute
Newton County Academy will hold a military appreciation ceremony for all current and former armed service members at 6:40 p.m. Sept. 7, immediately before the NCA Generals face off against Carroll County. Admission will be free for those with a military ID.
“Be Our Guest”
All area high school students are invited to attend and will be admitted free to the game between the East Central Warriors and the Southwest Mississippi Community College Bears Thursday, Sept. 13 for ECCC’s annual “Be Our Guest” night.
Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. in Bailey Stadium on the ECCC campus in Decatur.
In addition to free admission, students will have the chance to win door prizes and one lucky student will have the opportunity during half time to win a $1,000 Achievement Recognition Scholarship by kicking a 20-yard field goal.

Pearl River Clean Sweep
The Pearl Riverkeeper organization is looking for volunteers to take part in the second annual Pearl River Clean Sweep Sept. 15 and 22.
Hundreds of volunteers across two states will help collect trash and debris from the Pearl River from its origin in Nanih Waiya to the Gulf Coast.

How to Develop a Business Plan
East Central Community College’s Small Business Development Center will offer a free seminar on how to develop a business plan Sept. 17 at the Workforce Development Center, 52 9th Street.
The seminar is designed to help potential business owners identify customer groups, make marketing plans, plan for startup costs and manage cash flow. Information on recent industry research and product descriptions will be included.

Workforce Development Classes
East Central Community College Workforce Development Center will offer several classes at the Philadelphia/Neshoba County Career-Technical Center in September.
Classes include:
Sewing and Embroidery, 6 – 9 p.m., Monday, beginning Sept. 10. The class will continue for 8-weeks and will cost $150 per person.
Technology for Teachers, 4 – 6:30 p.m., Monday, beginning Sept. 10. The 8-week class will instruct teachers on how to use Google Classroom to share files between teachers and students. The cost is $60 per person.
Welding, 6 – 9 p.m., Monday, beginning Sept. 10. The cost is $150 per person.

Busy Hands Quilting Guild
Busy Hands Quilting Guild will meet 9:30 a.m., Sept. 11, in the Fellowship Hall of Decatur United Methodist
Church, Decatur. Please bring one of your favorite dishes as this is one of our four Pot Luck Lunch days for the year.
You will need your sewing machine and regular sewing supplies. The other supplies will be furnished by the person in charge of the program.
Bluegrass Gospel Singing on the River and Cornhole Tournament
The public is invited to head to the Chunky River Recreation area, Saturday, Oct. 20, for a day of music, fun and food at the Bluegrass Gospel Singing on the River and Cornhole Tournament.
Singing will begin at 11 a.m., with bands such as Leipers Fork Bluegrass, Pilgrim Family Bluegrass Band and Jason Archie Family
The first Boss Toss Cornhole Tournament will kick off after the music, around 3:30 p.m. Teams will be able to compete for a $5 entry fee. Prizes and trophies will be awarded to the first and second place finishers.
Admission is free, but residents are encouraged to stop by the concession stands, which will be available throughout the day. Bring your own lawn chair.

Domestic Violence Awareness
The Newton County Historical and Genealogical Society will hold its September meeting at 10 a.m. Sept. 8, in the Human Resources Building, Decatur. Leslie Payne from the Care Lodge, domestic violence shelter in Meridian will be the guest speaker. She will discuss the many sides of domestic violence and also the steps of intervention. She will also be bringing information on sex trafficking and how residents can be aware of their surroundings.
