Newton County MSU Alumni July Meeting
The Newton County Chapter of the Mississippi State Alumni Association will meet at 6 p.m. July 18. The location will be announced at a later date. All alumni, friends of MSU and Bulldog fans are invited to attend.
Crossroads Head Start Center 2019-2020 Applications
Crossroads Head Start/Early Head Start Center will be opening an Early Head Start Classroom in March 2019. The focus of services offered will be toddlers 13-24 months. The Crossroads Head Start Center is also accepting applications for the 2019-20 school year. If you are interested in your child participating in either of these programs, come to Crossroads Head Start/Early Head Start Center, 401 E. Railroad Street, Newton. Hours are 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Hope Missions Volunteer Opportunity
Hope Missions Newton Store is soliciting volunteers to assist with merchandise cleanup, stocking, sorting, cleaning, organizing and even building projects. The 1st Decatur Heritage Festival
The 1st Decatur Heritage Festival, held at 10th Ave. near East Central Alternative School (formally known as C.H. Boler School), will consist of a Fun 5K bike/run/walk, arts and craft vendors, spoken words, local politician, local entrepreneur, musicians and many more. The Festival will be held on April 20 from 7:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
The purpose of this festival is to celebrate special moments with relatives, family, church family and friends. Please encourage as many people to come out. There will be vendors, food, speakers, music and much more. Bring your lawn chair to enjoy this day. Please feel free to participate in the Fun 5K bike/run/walk starting at 7:30 a.m.

Newton County NAACP Elections
The Newton County Chapter of NAACP will hold elections for officers Tuesday, April 9 at 6 p.m., at the Third New Hope Building in Newton. All members whose memberships are current as of April 1 may be nominated for office or as an at-large member of the Executive Committee. All members are encouraged to attend.
Mississippi Writers Guild Newton-Neshoba Chapter meeting
The Newton-Neshoba Chapter of the Mississippi Writers Guild will meet 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at the Phildadelphia-Neshoba Library at 230 West Beacon Street, Philadelphia.
Adult public is invited (no children, please). Darden North, MD will be the guest speaker for the event and a multi-author book signing will follow. Both the meeting and the book signing will be in the Geneology Room of the library.
Dr. North is an OBG Doctor at Jackson Healthcare for Women in Flowood, and author of five mysteries, most in a medical setting. His published books are “Points of Origin”, “House Call”, “Fresh Frozen”, “Wiggle Room” and “The 5 Manners of Death.”
Books will be available for sale at the book signing, or your own copy will also be signed if desired. North will be signing, as will Virginia Welch and several others.
ECCC One-Day Painting, Soap Crafting Classes
Looking for something fun to do? Interested in learning a new craft? East Central Community College in Decatur will offer one-day continuing education courses in Painting 101 and Homemade Soap Crafting during the month of April. The cost for each course is $40 per person.
Painting 101 is offered Tuesday, April 23, and will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Art Studio in the Vickers Fine Arts Center. Local artist Deborah Carter will lead the class in basic painting techniques and participants will leave with their own original piece of artwork.
Homemade Soap Crafting will meet from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, in the Art Studio in the Vickers Fine Arts Center. Pam Rigdon, a local crafter, will demonstrate soap-making, including the safety and recipe basics.
