Because of the coronavirus pandemic, many businesses have experienced or are experiencing shortages, and many businesses have also been forced to lay off employees. These issues prevent people from obtaining necessary items, hurt businesses, and hurt the economy as a whole. While all businesses suffer during this time, small businesses suffer the worst, and since the both the country and the community are reopening, everyone should support small, local businesses.
Small businesses form the bedrock of this country’s economy and by extension, the bedrock of Union’s economy. As businesses begin to reopen (and even for the ones that have stayed open), Union residents should shop at local small businesses. While large chain stores—Walmart or Sam’s Club—have the resources to recover from a pandemic, small businesses do not. They rely on their loyal customers. Businesses in Union are no different. The local Piggly Wiggly has done an excellent job of keeping shelves stocked with groceries and other necessities during this pandemic, but with the lifting of restrictions, shopping at the Piggly Wiggly as opposed to chain stores supports both the businesses and the local economy. Similarly, shopping at Long’s Hardware Store instead of a large chain store will help support this business and Union as a whole. All other local Union businesses deserve this same support.
For readers who do not live in Union, everyone should support their community’s small businesses. Like Union residents, other readers should support their local grocery store, hardware store, and any other small business in their community. Shopping at small, local businesses support the economy and oftentimes offers higher quality merchandise than large chain stores. Some small businesses may also offer locally made goods, which supports the local economy. Furthermore, as restaurants reopen properly, they desperately need support as well, so a trip to a local restaurant (even for curbside delivery or drive-thru) helps immensely. In addition to supporting small businesses and local restaurants, everyone should also prioritize buying American-made products in order to support the national economy’s recovery.
With the easing of restrictions, businesses are reopening, and the economy can begin to recover. During this recovery, everyone needs to support local businesses; they have had everyone’s back during this pandemic, and everyone should have their back as they recover. This also goes for local restaurants. No one recovers from a crisis like a pandemic alone, and Union is no exception. Everyone must cling to and support their community during the road to recover.
