Since schools have been cleared to commence summer activities, many Union residents may be wondering what exactly Union High School has been doing in order to facilitate this reopening. Union High School is conforming to all state and federal guidelines regarding this and is taking precautions to protect the students and faculty, and everyone hopes that the fall semester will usher in a return to normalcy. Based on the summer functions of Union High School, this seems possible.
The Mississippi High School Activities Association declared that school sports and other activities could resume summer practices during the month of June. Before this, however, the MHSAA required that schools offer a two-week conditioning period in order to properly prepare students to return to practices. This conditioning allowed students to exercise (many may not have been able to during the shutdown) and rebuild fitness levels. This conditioning period was also designed to ease students back into a workout routine in order to prevent injuries. Union High School recently finished this conditioning period while adhering to all measures designed to prevent transmission of COVID-19—taking temperatures and restricting themselves to only an hour of activity a day. Students should be returning to normal practices schedules this week and for the rest of the summer. Band camp, drum camp, guard camp, and all sports camps will still occur this summer.
In addition to sports teams and activities return to a semblance of normalcy, other portions of the school have been returning to normal as well. Union Public Schools have been holding registration for the last few weeks, and teachers have been preparing for the rest of the summer and the fall. Union Public Schools has also been hiring several new teachers to join the jacket family and improve the school. Union Public Schools has also dedicated a team to reopening the school in the fall. For any updates on the other activities of the school, one can find them on the Union Public School District’s Facebook Page.
As many different things begin to return to normal, Union Public Schools are trying to as well. Union High School is doing an excellent job of balancing the state and federal guidelines while restarting summer activities and preparing for the fall. This provides a sense of normalcy for students, parents, and the community as a whole. The schools is a valuable asset to Union, and the school’s return to normalcy will provide a better sense of normalcy for the town as a whole.
