*1922 – F.C. Bradley installed a wireless radio station.
*1928 – Luke and Co. Wholesale Grocer built a concrete building for their business just west of Hotel Parker on Front Street. It opened Sept. 1, and the building is still standing today with the sign Union Tire attached to it.
*1929 - The water in Stamper’s Pond, the swimming area of the day, was tested by the Health Department and ruled safe from typhoid.
*1930 – The Bank of Decatur closed in March, and the Bank of Union closed in May, both closings a result of the Great Depression that began in 1929.
*1939 – Freeman and Thomas advertised Red Ball and Big Buck overalls for $1.00 a pair.
*1939 – Union School was selected as one of the 17 apprenticeship schools by the Vocational Agriculture Education Department of Miss. State College.
*1940 – A hard surfaced road was laid in front of the school on Forest Street.
*1944 – The Lebanon Shirt Co. was awarded the Army-Navy “E” for Excellence in the production of war materials.
*1952 and some years thereafter – UHS held a talent show at the school. At one event, Woody Assaf, weatherman for WLBT television in Jackson from 1953-2001, was the Master of Ceremonies.
*1950s –The Lions Club met at Sessums Hotel. Then they moved to the Bus Station Café and then to Laird Hospital Café, where they currently hold their meetings.
*1954 – In February, the Harlem Globe Trotters basketball team played against the Union All-Stars in the local gymnasium.
*1961 – On Sunday, the 19th of November, 562 people attended the churches in our town.
*1964 – The Beatles first came to the United States. Beatlemania began when they first played on the Ed Sullivan Show.
*1965 - The Barnett Reservoir was built.
*1966 – Midland Shirt Co. voted NO to allowing a workers’ union come into the plant.
*1969 - The Food Stamps program began.
*1969 – The first Chamber of Commerce banquet was held.
*1972 – Five traffic islands in downtown Union and two on Jackson Road/North Street were built by the State Highway Department to improve visibility at intersections as they re-routed Hwy. 15 through downtown Union while the bridge beside Laird Auto Sales was being repaired. The bridge today is beside Wards.
*1980 – Union Church of Christ opened on E. Jackson Road.
*2013 – A Blue Star Memorial Monument was placed in City Park on July 7 to honor our service men and women.
