Tawnie Holekamp, an upcoming sophomore at Newton County High School, earned the 2017-2018 Science Division I-Ninth Grade Champion trophy at the National Senior Beta Convention in Savannah, Ga., by placing first on the respective science test taken on site in June.
Holekamp’s test-taking strategy is looking at test taking as “less of a test and more of a game or a puzzle, like what piece is missing from this problem, how many of this do I need to match this? It’s always been more of a game to me.”
When exploring the most difficult part of the test, Holekamp reflected and concluded, “A question about Amedeo Avogadro: A Law, a Number, and the Mole.”
While one would suppose Holekamp to be a candidate for a career in the sciences, she is quick to say she is leaning toward music, “most likely band-directing, I have seen how much music can affect people, so I would love to help other people have the same feeling I have through band.”
Holekamp is the daughter of Greg and Melissa Holekamp of Decatur.
