Three area softball teams were able to squeeze in two games last week but none of them could bring home two wins.
Union, Lake and Newton County all managed to split a pair of games last week while Sebastopol won its only game.
Here’s a rundown of last week’s games:
Union Softball
The Lady Yellowjackets had an up-and-down week at the plate as they lost 8-1 to Lewisburg to open the season then rebounded and beat Lake 21-20.
Against Lewisburg, Union scored in the first while Lewisburg scored five runs in the first two innings to take control of the game. Union had just four hits and struck out 15 times. Pitcher for the Lady Yellowjackets Alanee Wheeler took the loss, giving up eight runs while striking out seven.
Against Lake, the Lady Yellowjackets scored a win in every inning and held off the Lake Hornets in the seventh to take the win. Union had 11 hits but drew 13 walks. Maggie Davis was 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Landry Hanna was 2-for-5 and Tiara Campbell was 2-for-6. Alanee Wheeler had a home run and five RBIs while Destiny Moulds and Landrey Bishop each doubled and drove in two runs. Wheeler pitched the first two innings and gave up three unearned runs while Abigail Cleveland and Raleigh Dickerson also pitched during the game.
Lake Softball
Lake opened the season with a 15-12 win over Nanih Waiya on Thursday before losing 21-20 to Union on Friday.
In their season opener, Lake had three 4-run innings and banged out 17 hits to take a three-run win over Nanih Waiya. Lake had 17 hits as Amaure’i Jones was 4-for-4 and scored three runs while Alyssa Sockey was 3-for-5 with four RBIs. Lydaysha Thames and Adyson McKnight each had two hits with a double and three RBIs while Kinsley Woods was 2-for-5 with three RBIs. Ceely Graham was 2-for-4 with four RBIs while Alaina Alford also had two hits. Daelyn Earls pitched the first four innings and gave up seven runs and the win while Graham picked up the save.
Against Union on Friday, the Lady Hornets lost despite banging out 21 hits. Lake never led in the contest as Lake scored six runs late to make it tight. Daelyn Earls was 4-for-5 with a double and five runs scored while Lydaysha Thames was 3-for-5 with five RBIs. Ceely Graham was 3-for-5 while Alyssa Sockey was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Adyson McKnight, Alaina Alford, Jacey Wells and Amaure’i Jones each had two hits apiece while Kinsley Woods also doubled and walked three times. Alford started on the mound and pitched three innings to take the loss.
Newton County Softball
The Lady Cougars opened with a 9-5 loss to Puckett but rebounded to take a 12-9 win over Enterprise.
In the season opener, Puckett scored five in the sixth to take the win. County had five hits in the contest as Adilyn Vaughn was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Mary Preston Williams also tripled while Gracey Wood had two stolen bases. Landry Brunson pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs while Lexi Stevens took the loss.
Against Enterprise, the Lady Cougars rallied with eight runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a three-run win. County had 11 hits, led by Lexi Stevens who was 3-for-4 with three doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs. Hannah Chaney and Tatum Evans were each 2-for-3 while Adilyn Vaughn and Hadley Amis each doubled. Lexi Addy started and pitched five inning while Macie McClure got the last two outs to get the win.
Sebastopol Softball
The Lady Bobcats only had one game, taking a 19-7 win over Mize on Thursday.
The Lady Bobcats opened up with seven runs in the first and finished with eight in the fourth to take the 12-run win. Sebastopol had 16 hits in the contest, led by Hanna Boleware who was 3-for-4 with a double, home run, three runs scored and three RBIs. Marlee Smith was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Bryleigh Myers was 3-for-3 with six RBIs. Savannah Crout and Jaylee Coleman were each 2-for-3 while Payton Chamblee and Emma Smith each scored two runs and had two RBIs. Crout pitched all four innings, giving up seven runs on six hits and three walks while striking out seven.
