Football: NMSD hires new coach

Newton High School has announced the appointment of Jeffery Crosby as the new head football coach for the Newton High School Tigers.

Crosby was formally introduced Monday night after being unanimously approved by the NMSD Board of Trustees. He follows Zackare Grady, who served as head football coach from 2018 to 2023.

BASKETBALL: Lady Cougars advance as 2-seed

The Newton County Lady Cougars just couldn’t find a way to get past Choctaw Central.

The Lady Warriors beat the Lady Cougars for the third time this season, handing Newton County a 59-42 loss in the 4-4A championship game on Friday night. County beat Leake Central 52-47 to advance to the title game.

Basketball: Bobcats win thriller to clinch home game

It was certainly an exciting week for the Sebastopol boys basketball team.

The Bobcats opened the Division 4-2A tournament with an back-and-forth 56-55 win over Union on Tuesday before falling 43-38 to Philadelphia in overtime on Friday in the tournament finals.

BASKETBALL: Lake girls take 3-seed to advance

The Lake Lady Hornets will get the opportunity to defend their back-to-back Class 2A titles but it will be a tough road.

The Lake girls finished third in Division 5-2A play, losing 60-47 to Newton in the semifinals before beating Scott Central 49-39 in the consolation game on Friday.
