Sports Brief: NCA girls get win over Russell Christian

The Lady Generals only played one game last week and took a 39-12 win over Russell Christian.

NCA outscored Russell 9-0 in the first period and 9-4 in the second to lead 18-4 at the half. NCA extended the lead in the second half, outscoring Russell 9-2 in the third and 12-6 in the fourth to take the win.

2A NORTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW: Yellowjackets go on road for spot in title game

Two of the top teams all season will meet this week in the North 2A championship game on Friday as Union (12-1) travels to Charleston on Black Friday.

The Tigers are 11-2 on the season and have won seven in a row since losing to 3A favorite Winona 48-26. Their other loss was a 20-16 setback to Ripley to open the season.

SOFTBALL: Phillips, Ben, Pippin sign scholarships

The Newton County softball team is sending three more players to the collegiate level.

Newton County recently held a signing ceremony for seniors Brelie Phillips, Maeli Ben and Abagail Pippin.

Long-time coach Justin Chaney beamed with pride when talking about his three seniors.
