SOFTBALL: Lady Generals pick up four victories

The Newton County Lady Generals picked up four wins on the softball fields this week to pull above the .500 mark for the first time this season.

NCA grabbed a key 6-4 win over rival Sylva Bay on Monday and then beat Kemper Academy 14-0 on Tuesday. On Thursday, NCA swept a doubleheader from Laurel Christian, winning 2-1 and 8-3.

Newton football coach Zach Grady said before the season that the Tigers needed to run the ball better to be successful this season.

The Tigers finally got the running game going as they had 419 yards rushing and pulled away late to take a 37-27 win over Heidelberg Friday night at E.L. Morgan Field.

Lake football coach Tate Hanna said the Hornets let one slip away on Friday night.

The Hornets squandered four red-zone chances, and Choctaw Central took a 12-6 overtime win over Lake.

Lake falls to 1-3 on the season and will travel to defending 2A state champion Scott Central on Friday night.

Newton County Academy football coach Steve Nelson said running back Hunter Scarbrough was tailor-made for the eight-man football league.

Scarbrough showed that on Friday night when he accrued 353 total yards with 250 yards rushing and recorded 17 tackles on defense to lead the Generals to a 56-37 win over Wilkinson County Christian.
