Newton County gets sweep of St. Stanislaus to advance

After ending the regular season with three straight losses, the Newton County baseball team bounced back in fine form with a pair of wins last week.

The Cougars swept their first-round playoff series, beating St. Stanislaus 6-3 on Thursday and then 7-0 on Friday.

Lake rebounds from NEL loss to down Wesson in first round

The Lake Hornets may have stumbled at the end of the regular season but that wasn’t the case in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.

After an 11-3 loss to Northeast Lauderdale on Monday, Lake swept two games from Wesson, winning 10-0 on Thursday and 14-9 on Friday to take the series win.

Lake advances

The Lake Lady Hornets won four straight games last week and moved close to the Class 2A championship series.

Lake, now 26-6 on the season, advances in the playoffs and will take on Taylorsville. Game 1 of the series will be Friday at Lake and Games 2 and 3 would be Saturday at Taylorsville.

Generals advance to semis

The Newton County Academy baseball team got in plenty of baseball this week and advanced to the Class 2A semifinals in the process.

NCA took a 7-1 win to open the series on Tuesday. On Thursday, Rossville took a 12-10 win in game 2 while the Generals bounced back to take a 10-7 win in game 3 to win the series.
