Antonio Gibson, a wide receiver who played at East Central Community College in 2016 and 2017, was drafted as the second pick in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday night by the Washington Redskins.
He was the 66th pick overall.
Gibson played for the ECCC Warriors in the 2016 and 2017 seasons and named Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges First Team All-State his sophomore season when he caught 21 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns. He also rushed for a score.
He was named MACJC Second Team All-State his freshman season while helping lead the Warriors to their first-ever MACJC South Division title and second consecutive trip to the state playoffs. That season he had 1,089 all-purpose yards and caught nine touchdown passes.
“The East Central football family is very excited for Antonio and his family as he takes his next step with the Washington Redskins,” said ECCC Head Football Coach Ken Karcher.
Gibson signed with the University of Memphis where he appeared in all 28 games as a Tiger and was named the 2019 American Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Year and was an all-conference selection.
He burst onto the scene his senior season in a nationally televised matchup against SMU on Nov. 2 with a conference and school record 386 all-purpose yards. He rushed for 97 yards, including a 78-yard touchdown, had 130 receiving yards, including a touchdown, and a 97-yard kickoff return, also for a touchdown.
He finished his career with 1,850 all-purpose yards (369 rush/834 receive/647 return).
