After a tough first-round win against a veteran Vancleave team, the Newton County tennis team cruised to a second-round win over McComb.
The Cougars dominated the action, crushing McComb 6-1 to advance to the Class 4A South State championship series.
Newton County is now 13-8 on the season and will host St. Stanislaus/Our Lady Academy for the Class 4A South State championship on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.
It is Newton County’s 12th straight year season to play for the 4A South State title while they have won that title 10 times. The Class 4A championship series would be at noon on Friday at Parham Bridges Tennis Center in Jackson.
County 6, McComb 1
The Cougars advanced to the Class 4A South State championship series with a solid win over McComb last week.
Newton County won both singles matches as Tate Baucum won 6-3, 6-2 in boys singles while Ava Espey won 6-0, 6-1 in girls singles.
In boys’ doubles, Daylon Nance and Lee Hill won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Cole Tadlock and Keenan Selman lost 7-6 (4), 6-4 at the No. 2 spot.
In girls’ doubles, Kamryn Rodriguez and Lauren Addy cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot while Marilyn Tullos and Brenah Flint won 6-4, 6-1 at the No. 2 spot.
Parker Chaney and Emily Stewart also cruised in mixed doubles, winning 6-0, 6-0.
