The Newton County Academy Generals have struggled this season but are playing better as they won two out of three games this past week.
The Generals beat Tri-County 39-30 on Monday and then hammered Prentiss 67-29 on Tuesday night. The Generals finished the week with a 61-35 loss to Brookhaven.
The Lady Generals beat Prentiss 45-38 for their only win while dropping games to Tri-County (36-26) and Brookhaven (66-38).
NCA will return to action this week when they host rival Sylva Bay on Tuesday and will then host Prentiss on Friday night. Both games are district contest for NCA.
Brookhaven boys 61, NCA 35
The Cougars pulled away in the fourth quarter and took a 26-point win on Friday night.
Brookhaven led 16-12 at the end of the first period and led 28-18 at the half. NCA outscored Brookhaven 9-6 in the third period to cut the lead to 34-27 at the end of the third. Brookhaven then finished by outscoring NCA 27-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Ethan McDill led the Generals with 18 points and 15 rebounds. Dalton Sibley also had 10 points.
Brookhaven girls 66, NCA 38
The Lady Cougars started quick and built a big lead to beat the Lady Generals by 28 on Friday.
Brookhaven led 20-6 at the end of the first and then outscored NCA 25-9 in the second to lead 45-15 at the half. The Lady Panthers outscored NCA 13-12 in the third before NCA claimed the fourth 11-8 for the final.
Kaleigh Cosgrove led NCA with 10 points while Jordan Russell had nine points and Kelli Hollingsworth added eight points.
NCA boys 67, Prentiss 29
The Generals opened a double-digit lead in the first and put the game away in the second half to take a 38-point win over Prentiss.
The Generals started strong as they led 19-4 at the end of the first and each team scored 15 points in the second period to lead 34-19 at the half. The Generals pulled away in the second half as they outscored Prentiss 17-2 in the third and 16-8 in the fourth.
Ethan McDill had another big night as he had 20 points and eight rebounds. Riley Boswell hit double digits for the first time with 11 points.
NCA girls 45, Prentiss 38
The Lady Generals overcame a first-half deficit and fought back to take a seven-point win on Tuesday night.
Prentiss jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first before NCA started to mount a comeback. NCA outscored Prentiss 11-5 in the second to cut the lead to 21-17 at the half. The Lady Generals took the lead in the third, outscoring the Lady Saints 18-7 to take a 35-28 lead into the fourth, where each team scored 10 points apiece.
Karli Blackledge led NCA with 15 points while Jordan Russell and Kaleigh Cosgrove each had 10 points apiece.
NCA boys 39, Tri-County 30
The Generals started quick and held on to take a nine-point win over the Rebels on Monday.
NCA jumped out to a 9-3 led in the first period and led 21-10 at the half. The Generals outscored the Rebels 9-4 in the third to lead 30-14 heading into the fourth. Tri-County used a 16-9 advantage in the fourth to take the win.
Ethan McDill had a double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds while Dalton Sibley had eight points.
Tri-County girls 36, NCA 26
The Lady Rebels took advantage of major foul trouble by NCA and outscored the Lady Generals 12-2 in overtime to take a 10-point win.
Each team scored four points in the first and Tri-County used a 10-5 advantage in the second to lead 14-9 at the half. NCA fought back in the second half, outscoring Tri-County 7-4 in the third and 8-6 in the fourth to send the game to overtime with the score tied at 24.
Jordan Russell led NCA with 13 points while Kaleigh Cosgrove had six points.
