Newton County finished off one of its best girls’ soccer seasons in recent years.
The Lady Cougars finished the season with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to Mooreville on Saturday in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs.
It was a tough loss for the Lady Cougars, who were coming off a 2-0 win over Corinth in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs last week.
Mooreville struck first in the playoff contest, scoring on a penalty kick in the first half to lead 1-0 at the half. The Lady Cougars tied the game midway through the first half when Brynn Boutwell scored on a penalty kick from about 35 yards out.
Regulation ended at 1-1 and Mooreville scored on another penalty kick in overtime and held on to take the win.
“It was a tight game,” Newton County coach Foreman said. “I think after it was over with we viewed it as a game of missed opportunities. We didn’t finish the opportunities and it just wasn’t our day. If you play sports long enough, there is going to be a day when things don’t go your way. It is what it is.”
The Lady Cougars finished with a 12-4-2 record in Foreman’s second year as head coach. The Lady Cougars graduate four seniors in Boutwell, Rhianna Gentry, Brittany Thomas and Landree Amis.
“This senior class set a foundation that we can build off of,” Foreman said. “They set the foundation for the younger group. We have a good group coming back that we think will be very competitive. It will be tough losing this group of seniors. They have meant a lot to the program. They should be proud of what they have accomplished in their time here.”
Foreman said the Lady Cougars enjoyed a good year with monumental wins over St. Andrews and Madison St. Joseph along the way.
“I’ve been here for five years and we made the playoffs my first year, so it’s been four years since we made the playoffs,” Foreman said. “We were very pleased with the year. We went to Jackson and had some big wins over St. Andrews and Madison St. Joe. We stepped up against some quality opponents and got some big wins. We tied the defending state champion in the first game of the season and that gave us some confidence early.”
