After a fourth period meltdown against Sebastopol on Thursday night, Union coach Matt Wilbanks didn’t know what to expect out of his Lady Yellowjackets on Friday night at rival Newton County.
After falling behind in the third period, the Lady Jackets rallied in the fourth and sent the game to overtime, taking a 50-48 win over the Lady Cougars.
Wilbanks realized how big the win was for his team.
“That was a big win for us,” Wilbanks said. “We played with a lot more effort than we didn’t on Thursday. We got down like 12 at one point, came back and tied it. We took the lead in overtime and were able to seal it and hold them off. It should be a confidence booster for us and maybe it will carry over for us.”
The first half was as even as it could be with each team scoring 17 in the first period and 11 in the second to make the score 28-28 at the half. County took the lead in the fourth, outscoring Union 9-5 to take a 37-33 lead. Union outscored County 12-8 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Ansley Rigby scored two baskets as Union held on to take the two-point win.
Rigby led all scorers with 20 points while Eryanna Mason had 19 points. Keirra Russell also had seven points.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 12 points while Remini Nicky had 11 points. Jayden Mack had nine points while Leanna Billy and Keasja Wansley each had six points apiece.
“We played much better tonight,” Newton County coach Cory Cleveland said “We’re a young team that is still making young mistakes. Once we correct those things, and learn how to keep our composure in pressure situations, we will become a better team.”
