The Newton Lady Tigers continued to knock off opponents this past week as the piled up three more wins.
The Lady Tigers had their hands full but pulled out a 45-43 win over Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday, then beat Wingfield 75-61 on Thursday before finishing out the week with a 54-26 win over Newton County on Friday.
The Tigers won two out of three games as they beat Southeast 39-37 and Newton County 72-43. They lost 56-53 to Wingfield.
Both teams will take on Choctaw Central on Friday at East Central as the girls play at 5:30 p.m. and the boys play at 7 p.m. The Tigers will also play on Saturday at 7 p.m. against Seminary.
Newton boys 39, Southeast Lauderdale 37
In a defensive battle, Newton held on to take a two-point win over Southeast to sweep the night.
Newton led just 5-4 after the first period but Southeast held a slim 14-12 lead at the half. In a back and forth second half, Newton outscored Southeast 12-9 in the third to go up 24-23 going into the fourth. Newton then used a 15-14 advantage in the fourth to take the win.
Jacquan Roberts led Newton with 11 points while Tyler Bedord had seven points and Yorel Phillips added six points.
Newton girls 45, Southeast Lauderdale 43
Newton overcame another second-half deficit to take a two-point win over Southeast Lauderdale on Tuesday.
Southeast led 9-6 at the end of the first but Newton held an 18-17 lead at the half. Southeast pulled out in front in the third period, outscoring Newton 17-7 to take a 34-26 lead into the fourth. But Newton came storming back and outscored Southeast 20-9 to take the two points win.
Myja McNichols led Newton with 15 points while McKinley Ware had 12 points and Ja’Leah Hickmon added 10 points.
Wingfield boys 56, Newton 53
The Tigers dropped a three-point contest to the Falcons on Thursday night.
Newton led 14-9 at the end of the first period before Wingfield outscored the Tigers 21-14 in the second to take a 30-28 lead at the half. Wingfield extended its lead in the third by outscoring Newton 18-12 to make the score 48-40 going into the fourth. Newton outscored Wingfield 13-8 in the fourth to pull close as the Falcons held on for the win.
Yorel Phillips led Newton with 22 points while Jamarian Pace added 11 points.
Newton girls 75, Wingfield 61
The Lady Tigers pulled away in the middle periods as they took a 14-point win at Wingfield on Thursday.
After each team scored 14 points in the first period, Newton outscored Wingfield 18-10 in the second to lead 32-24 at the half. The Lady Tigers extended that lead in the third, outscoring the Lady Falcons 19-12 to take a 51-36 lead into the fourth.
Nia McCalphia led newton with 24 points while Myja McNichols had 17 points and Ja’Leah Hickmon added 14 points. McKinley Ware also had 10 points.
Newton girls 54, Newton County 26
The Lady Tigers built a big lead in the first half and finished off with a big fourth to take a 28-point win over the Lady Cougars.
Newton led 12-7 at the end of the first and outscored the Lady Cougars 17-7 in the second for a 29-1 lead at the half. After outscoring County 11-10 in the third, Newton used a 14-2 advantage in the fourth to take the win.
Myja McNichols led Newton with 15 points while McKinley Ware and Ja’Leah Hickmon each had 10 points. Nia McCalphia also had eight points for the Lady Tigers.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 10 points while Hannah McDougle had seven points.
Newton boys 72, Newton County 43
The Tigers jumped out to a big lead in the first period and outscored the Cougars by 18 in the second half to pull away and take the win on Friday.
Newton started quick and led 20-6 at the end of the first. County fought back and outscored the Tigers 17-14 in the second as Newton led 34-23 at the half. The Tigers started to pull away in the second half as they outscored the Cougars 21-10 in the third and 17-10 in the fourth to take the win.
Jamarian Pace led Newton with 22 points while Jacquain Roberts and Tyler Bedford each had 10 points. DeShawn Watts and Yorel Phillips each had nine points apiece.
Josiah Cleveland had 19 points to lead Newton County while Deion Towner had nine points and Chris Thomas added six points.
