Mississippi schools went another week without high school athletics as both public and private schools continued with suspended play.
No decision has been made to call an end to the spring seasons by either Mississippi association. But a decision could be coming as coronavirus numbers skyrocket in the state.
But on Sunday, President Donald Trump extended social distancing until April 30, which is likely to push school openings to the end of April as well.
Several neighboring states have already moved to cancelling spring sports.
In Alabama, Gov. Kay Ivey ordered that all public schools remain closed through the end of the school year, which also ended all spring sports. In a release from the Alabama High School Activities Association, that all athletic events and activities, including, but not limited to, contests, practices, weight lifting and conditioning are suspended until further notice.
In Louisiana, schools remain closed until April 17 but haven’t cancelled spring activities yet.
In Tennessee, Gov. Bill Lee extended their statewide school closure until April 24 but also haven’t cancelled spring sports. Tennessee wasn’t able to complete its state basketball tournament. According to the Tennessee High School Activities Association, they will continue to explore options to finish their state basketball tournaments and resume spring sports.
