Union’s Andy Ogletree is set up to play in his first professional golf tournament.
Ogletree, who recently graduated from Georgia Tech, will be playing in the Charles Schwab at Colonial in Dallas on June 8 through the 14th.
Ogletree received an invitation to the event after winning the U.S. Amateur Championship last year.
“They always sent an invitation to the U.S. Amateur Champion,” Ogletree said. “I didn’t know if they were going to do that or not. I was hoping they were going to honor that exemption.”
Ogletree said he would remain an amateur until he plays in the Masters, which is scheduled for October this year.
Ogletree said he will arrive in Dallas on Sunday to play practice rounds before the tournament begins on Thursday.
“I have never played there but I have a lot of friends who have played the course so they have given me some insight,” Ogletree said.
After Dallas, Ogletree will head to Hilton Head, S.C., to play in the RBC Heritage. He said he is also scheduled to play in the U.S. Open, Sanderson Farms in Jackson and will get to the opportunity to defend his U.S. Amateur title this year as well.
“I know I’m in three events,” Ogletree said. “After that, I’m going to fill in some of the gaps with some other events.”
After graduating from Georgia Tech, Ogletree is back in Atlanta where he is continuing to play with some college teammates and PGA Pros.
“We have a group of tour guys that we are playing with,” Ogletree said. “We have about 20 people that we play with a couple times a week. There’s not a lot of difference in the tour guys and the high-level amateur. The difference is consistency. The tour guys are never going to shoot that high score. I think my golf is just as good. I’ve never thought that I couldn’t play with those guys.”
