It’s an honor for a school to have one pitcher selected to play in the Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Fast-Pitch softball game.
Newton County had two selected to play in the game.
Newton County rising seniors Brittany Thomas and Shelby Anderson were both selected to participate in the annual all-star game that was played at Jones County Junior College.
“They really did well,” Newton County coach Justin Chaney said. “They represented our school well. Both of them pitched and played defense. I think they really enjoyed it. There were a lot of college coaches there. I had a couple of coaches ask me about them. So, we will go from there and see what they want to do.”
Chaney said it’s rare that two pitchers from one school make the game for rising juniors. Chaney said both players saw time on the mound and both played in the field.
“No doubt, we are fortunate to have those two who can pitch for us,” Chaney said. “They represented us well. I know from talking to them, they enjoyed being around other girls from Mississippi.”
Anderson led the Lady Cougars in innings pitched this past season with 76.2 and struck out 44 while walking 14 as she went 9-3 with a 2.28 ERA. Thomas was 8-3 on the season with a 3.31 ERA as she struck out 43 and walked 21.
