The Union powerlifting team seems well on its way to a third straight state championship.
The Union powerlifters won the Class 2A North Meet on Saturday at East Union, beating out Urchins 62-43 for the title.
Union had four first-place winners, five second-place winners and one third-place winner that will advance to the state powerlifting tournament at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson on Saturday, April 13.
In the 148-pound weight class, Cody Rogers finished first with a total of 1,255 pounds. Rogers had a 465-pound squat, 225-pound bench press and 565-pound deadlift. Finishing second in the 148-pound division was Malcolm Clay, who had a total of 1,145 pounds.
In the 220-pound division, Raylon Nettles took first place with narrow win after totaling 1,415 pounds. Nettles had a 600-pound squat, 250-pound bench and a 565-pound deadlift.
In the 242-pound weight class, Trent McDonald beat out teammate Zach Collins for first place. McDonald had a total of 1,345 pounds while Collins had 1,295 pounds. McDonald had 565-pound squat, 235-pound bench and 545-pound deadlift.
In the 275-pound weight group, Jacob Moore beat out Michael Rush for second place by 30 pounds. Moore, the defending state champion, had 1,520 pounds while Rush had 1,490 pounds. Moore’s and Rush’s totals were the highest at the meet. Moore had a 625-pound squat, 310-pound bench and 585-pound deadlift.
Alex Sharp finished second in the 308-pound weight class with 1,390 pounds, losing by five pounds. Bankston Rush finished second in the 114-pound class with a total of 740 pounds while Collin Rigdon finished in a tie for third with 725 pounds. In the 132-pound weight class, Gavin Heath finished third, just five pounds off the lead.
