The Newton County Lady Cougars continued to pound the softball while the defense kept on making plays.
Newton County won two games last week as they pounded Quitman 11-2 and Newton County 8-0.
Thursday night’s game with Southeast Lauderdale was rained out and has been rescheduled for Sept. 10.
Newton County will return from the holiday weekend and will travel to Forest on Tuesday for a varsity doubleheader. On Thursday, the Lady Cougars will travel to Northeast Lauderdale.
County 11, Quitman 2
The Lady Cougars banged out 18 hits and used a big sixth inning to put away Quitman on Tuesday.
County scored three in the first and two in the third and led 5-0 after four innings. The Lady Cougars added one in the fifth while Quitman scored two in the fifth to make the score 6-2. County then put the game out of reach with eight runs in the sixth inning.
Katelyn Gipson had a big day at the plate as she went 3-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and three RBIs. Landree Amis was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored while Brittany Thomas was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with a double while Lorren Ivey was 2-for-3. Lanie Phillips and Karlye Tolbird each drove in two runs apiece.
Haley McDowell started on the mound and gave up two runs on three hits and six walks in 4 2/3 innings. Katelyn Gipson faced two batters and gave up two walks while Maeli Ben pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief and gave up one run and walked two.
Newton County 8, Union 0
Newton County broke open a tight game with a big sixth inning to beat home-standing Union on Monday night.
County scored three runs in the first and didn’t score again until the sixth when they pushed across five runs.
County had 13 hits in the contest as Karlye Tolbird continued her hot hitting, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs. Lorren Ivey and Lanie Phillips were each 2-for-3 and scored two runs apiece while Casey Dube was 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Landree Amis and Katelyn Gipson each doubled and scored a run.
Haley McDowell got the start and pitched four innings and gave up one hit and two walks. Katelyn Gipson pitched three innings and gave up one hit and won walk.
