The Newton County Academy Lady Generals got above the .500 mark with a pair of wins this past week, beating Hartfield 8-5 and Sylva Bay 15-0.
The Lady Generals will finish out the regular season, as they traveled to Prentiss on Monday and to Wayne on Tuesday. On Saturday, the Lady Generals will begin the postseason by participating in the Class AA South State tournament at Amite.
NCA 8, Hartfield 5
The Lady Generals used a five-run fifth inning to take a three-run win over Class AAAA Hartfield on Thursday.
NCA had seven hits in the contest as Kaleigh Cosgrove, Kelli Hollingsworth and Belle Hollingsworth each had singles and drive in two runs apiece. Marla Graham, Jordan Russell and Amber Garrison each singled and scored. Taylor Evans walked twice and Cosgrove scored twice.
Evans got the start on the mound and pitched six innings as she gave up five runs on eight hits and struck out three.
NCA 15, Sylva Bay 0
The Lady Generals used a 12-run fifth inning to pull away and take a five-inning, run-rule victory over rival Sylva Bay.
The Lady Generals had 12 hits in the contest as Kelli Hollingsworth was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Jordan Russell was 2-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored. Kaleigh Cosgrove was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs while Belle Hollingsworth was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Marla Graham was 2-for-4 while Abbie McGee was had two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs. Lily Hollingsworth had two walks and two RBIs as well.
Taylor Evans got the start on the mound and pitched five shutout innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts.
