Newton County Academy football coach Rob Roberts said he didn’t really know what to expect when he took his team over to East Rankin on Friday.
Roberts said he was especially pleased with his offensive line.
“We played a lot better than I thought we would,” Roberts said. “I know we looked a lot better than we did last year at this time. We don’t have but seven lineman and two of them were hurt. They had to play the whole time and did a good job. We really the ball pretty good and threw it pretty good as well. I was really surprised.”
Roberts said quarterback Zander Meeks looked good at time throwing the ball and he also praised his running backs.
“I thought Eli Finnegan and Braxton Thoms ran the ball really well,” Roberts said. “Colby Hollingsworth game in and had a couple of good runs for us. I thought the defense looked really good. We aren’t very big but I thought we got after it pretty good. We have been throwing a lot and trying to get better at that. Zander looks better throwing the ball every week.”
The Generals will participate in the Tri-County Academy jamboree on Thursday as the kick off the day at 3:30 p.m. against Carroll Academy. Then at 4:30 p.m., the Generals will take on Leake Academy.
“We are still going to work on us and try to clean up some of the things we did wrong last week,” Roberts said. “We’ve got to get in better shape to play four quarters. I thought we got tired at the end of the scrimmage and started to miss some blocks. I told them that we weren’t ready to play a full game and had to do more running this week and they all agreed that we did.”
The Generals will open the regular season on Aug. 23 at Porter’s Chapel in Vicksburg.
