After some tough losses, the Newton County Academy Generals won a pair of close games last week.
The Generals avenged a loss to rival Sylva Bay and beat the Saints 40-36 and then took a 29-28 win over Tri-County Academy on Tuesday. NCA finished the week with a 39-20 loss to Manchester on Friday.
The NCA girls lost all three of their games last week.
NCA will now be off until after the Christmas holiday when they play in the Lamar School tournament on Dec. 27, 28 and 30th.
NCA boys 40, Sylva Bay 36
After losing by nine to Sylva Bay last week, the Generals took a four-point win over the rival Saints on Monday.
NCA led 13-9 at the end of the first and 23-19 at the half. Sylva Bay forced overtime as they outscored NCA 11-8 in the third and 3-2 in the fourth. NCA outscored Sylva Bay 7-3 in overtime to take the win.
Austin Upton led NCA with eight points while Zander Meeks, Lee Hollingsworth and Kemp Alderman each had seven points apiece. Riley Boswell also chipped in six points.
Sylva Bay girls 39, NCA 18
The Lady Generals struggled in the first half as they dropped a 21-point decision to the Lady Saints on Monday.
Sylva Bay led 8-5 at the end of the first and 17-5 at the half. Sylva Bay extended its lead in the second half, outscoring the Lady Generals 13-8 in the third and 9-5 in the fourth.
Asten Russell led NCA with seven points.
NCA boys 29, Tri-County 28
The Generals finished strong and took a one-point win over the Rebels on Tuesday for their second win of the week.
NCA outscored Tri-County 7-5 at the end of the first while the Rebels led 12-10 at the half. Tri-County outscored NCA 8-7 in the third for a 20-17 advantage. NCA outscored Tri-County 12-8 in the fourth to take the win.
Riley Boswell led NCA with 18 points.
Tri-County girls 53, NCA 44
The Lady Rebels built an early lead and maintained that advantage to take a nine-point win over the Lady Generals on Tuesday.
Tri-County led 10-3 at the end of the first and 28-17 at the half. NCA outscored Tri-County 14-11 in the third to cut the lead to 39-31 going into the fourth. Tri-County outscored NCA 14-13 in the fourth for the final margin.
Belle Hollingsworth led NCA with 19 points.
Manchester boys 36, NCA 24
The Mavericks pulled away in the second half to take a 12-point win over the Generals.
Manchester led 4-3 at the end of the first but NCA took a 12-10 lead into the half. Manchester outscored NCA 11-8 to take a 21-20 lead into the fourth. Manchester outscored NCA 15-4 in the fourth to take the win.
Riley Boswell led NCA with 10 points while Austin Upton had nine points and 10 rebounds.
Manchester 39, NCA 20
A slow started doomed NCA as they dropped a 19-point decision to the Lady Mavericks on Friday.
Manchester led 10-4 at the end of the first and 18-4 at the half. NCA outscored Manchester 10-6 in the third to cut the lead to 24-14 going into the fourth. Manchester took the fourth 15-6 for the final margin.
Belle Hollingsworth led NCA with six points.
