For the second straight week, the Newton County Academy Generals flexed their muscle on the football field.
The Generals scored early and often and took a 33-0 win over Benton Academy on Friday night.
The Generals improve to 2-0 on the season and will take on Oak Hill Academy this week.
For the second straight week, the Generals dominated both sides of the football.
“I thought we were really balanced for the second week in a row,” NCA coach Rob Roberts said. “We came out and blocked pretty well on offense and were able to move the football. I thought the defense did a good job of containing what they do. I thought it was an overall good team effort.”
After turning the ball over on downs to start the game, the Generals got rolling on their second possession as Eli Finnegan returned the ball 25 yards to midfield. From there, The Generals went 50 yards in five plays as Eli Finnegan scored on a 30-yard run. Hayden West booted the PAT and NCA led 7-0 at the end of the first period.
After a punt, the Generals scored on their fourth drive after recovering a fumbled snap at the Benton 22. Six plays later, Kemp Alderman scored on a 1-yard keeper to cap off the six-play drive. The PAT failed and NCA led 13-0.
After an interception by Hayden Wall, the Generals needed just two plays to score as Finnegan scored on a 9-yard touchdown run. West booted the PAT and NCA led 20-0.
After a Benton three-and-out on offense, the Generals extended their lead before the half as Colby Hollingsworth scored on a 25-yard run. West’s PAT was good and NCA led 27-0 at the half.
“I thought we played really good on defense,” Roberts said. “They weren’t able to run the ball on us and weren’t able to throw it either. We were able to get a lot of pressure on them. They never really got anything going and we did a good job of attacking what they do.”
After a pair of short punts, the Generals took advantage of a short punt as Finnegan scored on a 19-yard touchdown run. The PAT failed and NCA led 33-0.
Finnegan had another big night with 206 yards on 12 carries while Hollingsworth had 74 yards on four carries. Zander Meeks was 5-of-7 passing for 101 yards. West had three catches for 51 yards.
“We stayed spread out the whole game and did a good job of staying balanced,” Roberts said. “We stayed after them and wore them down. By halftime, I thought had wore them down and did what we wanted to do. I thought we had some good field position and were able to take advantage of that.”
