A season’s worth of injuries caught up with Newton County Academy last week against Tri-County Academy.
The Rebels scored early and often as they built a 35-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 42-8 win over the Generals.
The Generals fall to 3-6 overall and will host Centreville this week for senior night. The Generals can still make the Class 3A playoffs with a win over Centreville but head coach Rob Roberts said a loss would end the Generals’ season.
“As far as I can tell, it’s pretty simple, if we win we are in and if we lose we are done,” Roberts said. “I think if we play four quarters of good football, we will have a chance.”
Roberts said the Generals struggled to stop a potent Tri-County offense on Friday night.
“We weren’t ready to play, at all,” Roberts said. “They just ran all over us. They did what they wanted to do and we couldn’t do anything to stop it. It was 35-0 before the half and they started to run the clock with five minutes left in the half. We just tried to get out of there without getting anybody else injured. It wasn’t good at all.”
The Rebels, who are now 8-1 overall, had little difficulty with the Generals as they scored 21 points in the first quarter and 14 in the second to lead 35-0 at the half.
“I give them credit, Tri-County played really well,” Roberts said. “They didn’t have a lot of big kids on the line but they took it to us, there’s no doubt about that. It was senior night for them and they were fired up and ready to play and we weren’t.”
Tri-County added another score in the third quarter to go up 42-0 while NCA scored late in the fourth on a 15-yard run by Lee Hollingsworth.
The Generals had 105 yards rushing Colby Hollingsworth had 48 yards on 11 carries. Hayze West had 22 yards on eight carries.
On defense, Colby Hollingsworth led the team with 11 tackles while Kemp Alderman had 10. Lee Hollingsworth and Hayze West each had nine tackles apiece while Zach Evans had seven tackles. Jordan Mason and Hayden Wall each had six tackles apiece while Wesley Williams and Trey Terrell each had four tackles apiece.
