After a strong run through the regular season, the Newton County Lady Cougars season came to an end in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs last week.
The Lady Cougars weren’t able to hold onto a first-half lead, as Sumrall pulled away late and took a 59-50 win Feb. 17.
Newton County finished the season with a 20-10 record.
Newton County coach Cory Cleveland had nothing but praise for his Lady Cougars in a season that included a 14-game winning streak and win the Division 5-4A regular-season title.
“I’m extremely proud of our girls and the season we had,” Cleveland said. “Although we didn’t get the desired outcome that we were looking for, all the hard work, and sacrifice that was put into the season helped it to be both successful, and memorable for these young ladies.”
Newton County started quickly as they led 18-13 at the end of the first period and 27-24 at the half. Sumrall controlled the second half as they outscored County 14-10 in the third period to take a 38-37 lead going to the fourth. Sumrall finished off by outscoring County 21-13 in the fourth to take the win.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 11 points. Jayden Mack added 10 points. Hannah McDougle and Christaysia Denson each scored seven points apiece followed by Keasja Wansley had five points.
