The Newton County boys' soccer team used a dominating offense and smothering defense to take a 7-2 over rival West Lauderdale on Friday and claim the Division 5-4A championship.
Newton County improves to 18-1 on the season with the win and secured the Division 5-4A title with the win.
Newton County scored three goals in the first half and led 3-0. The Cougars added four goals in the second half to take the run-away win.
Graham Lewis had a big night for the Cougars as the sophomore scored three goals for Newton County. Senior Davi Roldan scored two goals while junior Lee Hill scored two goals and had one assists. Junior Christian Velazquez had three assists for the Cougars while Gustavo Silva and Cole Tadlock each had assists for the Cougars.
Newton County is set to Choctaw Central on Tuesday in a division contest and then host Germantown on Friday. Newton County will round out the regular season on Saturday as they host Clarkdale on Saturday. Last Tuesday’s game with Kosciusko was rained out.
In the girls’ game, the Lady Cougars lost a 1-0 decision to the Lady Knights. The Lady Cougars fall to 12-6 on the season and 5-2 in division play.
In other news
Four Newton County players were also named to the Central Mississippi All-star soccer team. The all-star game will be played on Feb. 11 at Bailey Stadium at East Central Community College.
Making the team from Newton County is Lee Hill, Gustavo Silva and Davi Rolden. On the girls’ team from Newton County is Morgan Massey.
