The holiday break served the Newton County basketball teams well.
Both teams won both games they played last week with a sweep of Sebastopol and Scott Central.
The Lady Cougars beat Sebastopol 61-32 on Monday and the beat Scott Central 57-42 on Scott Central on Friday. The Cougars held on to take a hard-fought 51-48 win over Sebastopol and then took a 60-48 win over Scott Central on Friday to wrap up the week.
Newton County will now open Division 5-4A play this week as they host Mendenhall on Tuesday and travel to Florence on Friday.
County girls 57, Scott Central 42
The Lady Cougars started quick and took a 15-point win over the Lady Rebels on Friday night.
Newton County jumped out to a 14-4 lead in the first period and led 33-17 at the half. Scott Central took the first period 15-10 in the third before Newton County finished out the fourth by outscoring the Lady Rebels 14-10.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 12 points while Jayden Mack had nine points. Hannah McDougle had seven points while Remini Nickey and Alyssa McMullan each had six points apiece.
County boys 60, Scott Central 48
The Cougars started quick in each half and took a 12-point win over the Rebels on Friday.
Newton County jumped out to an 18-6 lead in the first period and led 26-20 at the half. The Cougars outscored the Rebels 19-12 in the third to lead 45-32 going into the fourth.
Jamaal Croft had one of his best games of the season as he led Newton County with 24 points while Josiah Cleveland had 17 points. Miguel Evans also chipped in eight points.
County girls 61, Sebastopol 32
The Lady Cougars outscored the Lady Bobcats in every period and took a 29-point win over the Lady Bobcats.
County jumped out to an 11-3 lead and led 25-12 at the half. County outscored Sebastopol 11-10 in the third and finished off the game by outscoring the Lady Bobcats 20-10.
Nahriah Brown led Newton County with 18 points while Jayden Mack added 10 points. Christaysia Denson led Newton County with nine points while Alyssa McMullan added seven points
Newton County boys 51, Sebastopol 48
The Cougars mounted a big come back and took a three-point win over the Bobcats on Monday.
County led 12-11 at the end of the first but Sebastopol outscored the Cougars 18-11 in the second to lead 29-23 at the half. The Cougars outscored the Bobcats 12-9 in the third to cut the lead to 38-35. But the Cougars outscored the Bobcats 16-7 in the fourth to take the win.
Josiah Cleveland led Newton County with 15 points while Davion Hillie added 12 points. Jared Thames had six points while Chris Thomas and Donovan McCoy each had five points apiece.
