The Newton County softball team picked up a pair of wins last week on the softball diamond.
Newton County opened the week with a 6-3 win over Northwest Rankin on Friday and then beat Meridian 12-1 on Saturday.
Newton County, now 3-1, is set to return to action as they go to Neshoba Central on Tuesday. The Lady Cougars will then host Enterprise on Thursday and then play Long Beach on Friday at 6 p.m. at the West Harrison Tournament and will play Stone County on Saturday at 11 a.m.
County 6, NW Rankin 3
Newton County got a solid pitching performance and took a three-run win over Northwest Rankin on Friday night.
County scored one in the first and two in the third to lead 3-0. But Northwest Rankin scored three runs in the top of the fourth to tie the game. County then scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to take the win.
County outhit Northwest Rankin 8-6 in the contest. Lizzy Hollingsworth was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored. Loren Ivey was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Alex Weir was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases, an RBI and a run scored.
Mckenzie Rigdon pitched three innings and gave up three runs on five hits to pick up the win. Ivey pitched the last four innings and gave up one hit and struck out six to pick up the save.
County 12, Meridian 1
The Lady Cougars scored in every inning and took a run-rule win over the Lady Wildcats on Saturday.
The Lady Cougars scored two in the first and second, three in the third and five in the fourth to win by the run rule.
County had six hits and drew seven walks. five were hit by a pitch. Lanie Phillips was 2-for 3 with a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Mackenzie Rigdon doubled, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Alex Weir singled and drove in two runs. Katelyn Gipson walked twice and scored two runs.
Mandarie Leach started and pitched three innings, giving cup one run on three hits and three walks. striking out three. Natalie Lampton and Hannah Chaney each pitched an inning in relief.
