The Newton County Lady Cougars won two out of three games this past week on the softball diamond.
After losing 10-0 to Northwest Rankin on Friday, the Lady Cougars responded with a pair of wins, beating D’Iberville 10-8 on Friday and West Harrison 10-5 on Saturday.
Newton County, now 7-2 on the season, was scheduled to begin division 5-4A play this week but those games were postponed by the MHSAA.
County 10, West Harrison 5
The Lady Cougars scored eight runs in the fourth inning and took a five-run win over the Lady Hurricanes on Saturday.
The game was tied at 2-2 after three innings before County scored eight in the fourth. West added two in the fifth and one in the seventh.
County outhit West 8-6 in the contest. Brelie Phillips was 2-for-2 while Maeli Ben was 2-for-3. Lanie Phillips doubled, scored two runs and had two RBIs. Katelyn Gipson singled and drove in two runs.
Mandarie Leach pitched five innings and gave up four runs on six hits and three walks while striking out two. Hannah Chaney pitched the final two innings and gave up one unearned run.
County 10, D’Iberville 8
The Lady Cougars rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to take a two-run win over Lady Warriors on Friday.
County scored four in the third and led 5-1 after four innings before D’Iberville scored four runs in the fifth and three in the sixth.
County outhit D’Iberville 8-5 in the contest. Alex Weir was 2-for-4 while Maeli Ben was 2-for-3. Lizzy Hollingsworth tripled and drove in three runs, including two in the seventh. Katelyn Gipson tripled and scored two runs while Lorren Ivey also tripled for the Lady Cougars. Brelie Phillips had two RBIs while Lanie Phillips scored two runs.
County stole 10 bases in the contest with Hollingsworth, Gispon, Brelie Phillips and Weir each stealing two bases.
Natalie Lampton pitched the first four innings giving up three runs on two hits and five walks while striking out one. Hannah Chaney pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up five runs-on two hits and two walks while Mackenzie Rigdon pitched 2/3 of an inning and gave up one hit to pick up the win. Mandarie Leach pitched the final inning to pick up the save.
Northwest Rankin 10, County 0
The Lady Cougars struggled at the plate and in the field as they were shut out by Northwest Rankin.
Northwest scored one in the first and fifth, two in the fourth and seventh and four in the sixth.
Northwest outhit County 10-4 in the contest. Lanie Phillips, Lizzy Hollingsworth, Casey Dube and Brelie Phillips each had singles in the game.
Lorren Ivey pitched five innings and gave up four runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five. Mackenzie Rigdon pitched the final two innings and gave up six runs on five hits.
