After a rough start to the season, the Newton Lady Tigers completed an undefeated run through the Division 6-2A schedule to take the top spot in this week’s tournament.
The Lady Tigers beat Union 52-41 and needed overtime to beat Scott Central 49-47 on Tuesday.
The Tigers won both of their games as well this week as they beat Union 56-42 and took a big 73-50 win over Scott Central.
The Newton girls are undefeated in division play and are the No. 1 seed in this week’s Division 6-2A tournament being played at Newton. The Tigers will play the winner of the Lake and Philadelphia game on Thursday at 4 p.m.
The Newton boys are the No. 2 seed in this week’s Division 6-2A Tournament and will take on No. 3 seed Union on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. The championship game is Friday at 8:30 p.m.
Newton girls 52, Union 41
The Lady Tigers overcame an early deficit and took an 11-point win over the Lady Yellowjackets on Friday.
Each team scored 12 points in the first period and Union led 24-22 at the half. But Newton had a big second half as they outscored Union 12-4 in the third and 18-13 in the fourth to take the win.
Zia Shields led Newton with 22 points while Cornesha Jones had 12 points.
Keirra Russell led Union with 12 points while Madison Buckley and Trinity Lambert each had eight points apiece.
Newton boys 56 , Union 42
The Tigers used a big third period to overcome a first-period deficit and take a 14-point win over the Yellowjackets on Friday night.
Union led 6-5 at the end of the first and 18-14 at the half. But Newton came out on fire in the second half and outscored Union 29-13 in the third to take a 43-31 lead into the fourth. Newton also took the fourth period 13-10 to take the win.
Justin Thompson led Newton with 24 points while Kedrick Osby, Rayvion Nettles and Tyreke Snow each had seven points apiece.
J.T. Vance led Union with 15 points while Jamarcus Jones had eight points. Jada Russell and Dylan Harrison each had five points apiece for the Yellowjackets.
Newton girls 49, Scott Central 47
The Lady Tigers needed an extra period to take a two-point win over the much-improving Lady Rebels on Tuesday.
Scott Central led 14-10 at the end of the first but the score was tied at 21-21 at the half. Newton took the third period 14-6 to lead 35-27 going into the fourth. But Scott Central outscored Newton 12-4 in the fourth to send the game into overtime. Newton then outscored Scott Central 10-8 in the overtime to take the win.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 22 points while Kania Arrington had 11 points.
Newton boys 73, Scott Central 50
The Tigers pulled away from the Rebels and took a big 23-point win over the Rebels on Tuesday.
Each team scored 19 points in the first half while Newton outscored Scott 20-13 in the second period to lead 39-32 at the half. Newton continued to pull away in the second half and outscored Scott Central 21-12 in the third and 13-6 in the fourth to take the win.
