The Newton Lady Tigers completed another successful run through division competition last week by claiming the 6-2A Tournament title.
The Lady Tigers repeated as division champions as they beat Lake 63-43 on Thursday and beat Union 52-43 on Friday to claim the Division 6-2A championship.
The Newton girls improve to 18-8 on the season and have won 11 in a row since a Jan. 3 loss to West Lowndes. Newton host Collins on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the first round of the Class 2A South State playoffs.
The winner of that game will get to play the winner of Loyd Star and Taylorsville.
Newton’s Ja’Leah Hickmon was named the Division 6-2A Tournament Most Valuable Player while Zia Shields, Cornesha Jones and Kania Arrington were named to the all-tournament team. Hickmon was also named the Division 6-2A Player of the year while Ty Harden was named the 6-2A Coach of the year. Jones, Arrington and Shields were all named to the 6-2A all-region team.
Newton girls 52, Union 43
The Lady Tigers pulled away in the second half as they took a nine-point win over the Lady Yellowjackets on Friday in the 6-2A championship game.
Union led 12-10 at the end of the first but trailed 18-16 at the half.
Newton started to pull away in the second half, outscoring Union 20-18 in the third and 14-9 in the fourth.
Kamyia Russell led Union with 13 points while Keirra Russell and Trinity Lambert each had eight points apiece.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 17 points while Cornesha Jones had 12 points and Zia Shields added 11 points. Kania Arrington also chipped in seven points.
Newton girls 63, Lake 43
The Lady Tigers built an early lead and took a 20-point win over the Lady Hornets in the 6-2A semifinals on Thursday.
Newton started quick and led 26-17 at the end of the first and led 37-24 at the end of the second. Newton put the game away in the third, outscoring Lake 12-2 in the third to lead 49-26 going to the fourth.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 23 points while Zia Shields had 17 points and Kania Arrington added nine points.
Laneisha Palm and Laurel Breland each had 12 points apiece for Lake.
