The Newton Lady Tigers added two more Division 6-2A wins this week as they took control of the division standings.
Newton beat Philadelphia 68-46 on Monday and then beat Lake 57-42 on Friday to improve to 14-8 and 6-0 in division play.
The Tigers splits a pair of games and moved to 9-14 on the season as they lost 69-62 to Philadelphia and then beat Lake 62-47 on Friday.=
Newton will finish out the regular season this week as they host Scott Central on Tuesday and Union on Friday for Senior night.
Philly boys 69, Newton 62
The Tornadoes finished strong to take a seven-point win over the Tigers in a make-up game on Monday.
Newton led for the majority of the contest as they outscored Philly 17-10 in the first and led 28-27 at the half. The Tigers outscored the Tornadoes 22-20 in the third to lead 50-47 going to the fourth. But the Tornadoes rallied in the fourth to outscore the Tigers 22-13 and take the seven-point win.
Tyreke Snow led Newton with 17 points while Kedrick Osby had 14 points.
Newton girls 68, Philly 46
The Lady Tigers pulled away in the second period and took a 22-point win over the Lady Tornadoes on Monday.
Philly led 12-11 at the end of the first before Newton outscored the Lady Tornadoes 17-4 in the second to lead 28-16 at the half. Newton continued to outscored Philly in the second half as they outscored the Lady Tornadoes 19-16 in the third and 21-13 in the fourth.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 27 points while Zia Shields had 20 points and Cornesha Jones added 16.
Newton boys 62, Lake 47
The Tigers controlled the game from the beginning and took a 15-point win over the Hornets on Friday.
Newton led 12-6 at the end of the first and outscored Lake 23-16 in the second to lead 35-22 at the half. Lake took the third period 17-13 to cut the lead to 48-39 before Newton finished by outscoring the Hornets 13-7 in the fourth.
Kezarrian Wash led Newton with 16 points while Justin Thompson had 11 points. Jaylen Barton had 10 points while Rayvion Nettles had seven points and Tyreke Snow added six points.
Danarrious Hughes led Lake with 20 points while Davonte Rankin had nine points. Brady McGee also chipped in seven points.
Newton girls 57, Lake 42
The Lady Tigers built a double-digit lead in the first period and took a hard-fought 15-point win over the Lady Hornets.
Newton jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first period and outscored Lake 16-11 in the second to lead 32-17 at the half. Newton continued to extend its lead in the third, outscoring Lake 12-8 in the third to lead 44-25 going to the fourth.
Zia Shields led Newton with 19 points while Cornesha Jones and Ja’Leah Hickmon each had 17 points.
Ameria Ervin led Lake with 12 points while LaNeisha Palm had 10 points and D’Nara Palm added eight points.
Lake Roundup
It was a tough week on the hardwoods for the Lake basketball team as they were swept in both games by Newton and Scott Central.
The Lady Hornets last 57-42 to Newton and 41-31 to Scott Central while the Hornets lost 62-47 to Newton and 44-42 to Scott Central.
Lake’s only scheduled game this week will be Friday night as they host Philadelphia for Senior night.
Scott Central boys 44, Lake 42
The Hornets came out hot but couldn’t hold on as the Rebels stormed back to take the win.
Lake led 14-5 at the end of the first period but Scott Central outscored the Hornets 17-9 in the second to cut the lead to 23-22 at the half. Scott Central outscored Lake 11-6 in the third to take a 33-29 lead into the fourth. Lake took the fourth 13-11 but couldn’t pull out the win.
Danarrious Hughes led Lake with 16 points while D’Vonte Rankin added 14 points.
Scott Central girls 41, Lake 31
The Lady Hornets fell behind early and never contended as the Lady Rebels took a 10-point win.
Scott Central led 14-0 at the end of the first and outscored Lake 9-2 in the second to lead 23-2 at the half. Lake outscored Scott Central 8-7 in the third and 21-11 in the fourth to cut the margin to 10 points.
Laurel Breland led Lake with 15 points while Laneisha Palm and TraShaylah Wilson each had seven points apiece.
