The Newton basketball teams a busy Christmas holidays with four games for each team.
The Lady Tigers won three of four games while the Tigers split the four games they played.
Newton will return to action as they host the Newton Shootout in Friday and Saturday. No schedule was available at press time for the tournament.
Newton girls 58, Leake Co. 34
The Lady Tigers had little trouble as they cruised to a 24-point win over the Lady Gators.
Newton led 12-8 at the end of the first and outscored Leake 13-1 in the second to lead 25-9 at the half. Leake outscored Newton 18-13 in the third to cut the lead to 38-27 going into the fourth But Newton outscored Leake 20-7 in the fourth to take the 24-point win.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 21 points while Zia Shields had 18 points.
Newton boys 72, Leake Co. 69
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead and held on to take a three-point win over the Gators at the Bay Springs Tournament.
Newton started quick and led 26-12 at the end of the first but Leake outscored the Tigers 14-7 in the second to cut the score to 33-26. Newton extended its lead in the third, outscoring Leake 24-19 for a 57-45 lead going into the fourth. Leake outscored Newton 24-15 in the fourth for the final margin.
Kedrick Osby led Newton with 20 points while Kezarrian Wash had 14 points and Kaleb Traxler added 10 points.
Heidelberg girls 48, NHS 41
The Lady Tigers fell behind early as the Lady Oilers held on to take a seven-point win.
Heidelberg led 15-9 at the end of the first but Newton took the second period 12-5 and led 21-20 at the half. Heidelberg outscored Newton 12-6 in the third to lead 32-28. The Lady Oilers took the fourth period 16-14 to hold on for the win.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 19 points while Zia Shields added 11 points.
Heidelberg boys 57, NHS 32
The Tigers struggled early as the Oilers took a 25-point win.
Heidelberg jumped out to an 18-1 lead in the first and led 29-14 at the half. Heidelberg continued to extend its lead in the second half, outscoring Newton 15-9 in the third and 13-9 in the fourth.
Kedrick Osby led Newton with 17 points.
Newton girls 56, W. Laude. 28
The Lady Tigers got off to a quick start and doubled up the Lady Knights last week.
Newton jumped out to a 27-3 lead in the first period and led 33-8 at the half. Newton outscored West 15-3 in the third to lead 48-11 going to the fourth.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 14 points while Kania Arrington had 11 points. Zia Shields had 10 points while Mariana Thames added eight points.
Newton boys 70, W. Laude. 65
The Tigers overcame an early deficit and came back to take a five-point win over the Knights.
West led 22-15 at the end of the first and 34-31 at the half. Newton outscored West 22-17 in the third to give the Tigers a 53-48 lead into the fourth. Newton extended its lead in the fourth, outscoring West 17-14 in the fourth.
Kedrick Osby led Newton with 21 points while Kezarrian Wash had 13 points. Justin Thompson had 11 points while Rayvion Nettles added 10 points.
NHS girls 51, Kemper Co. 31
The Lady Tigers built a big lead and cruised to a 20-point win over the Lady Wildcats.
Newton led 15-6 at the end of the first and 26-12 at the half. Newton put the game away in the third, outscoring Kemper 17-9 to lead 43-21.
Ja’Leah Hickmon led Newton with 16 points while Kania Arrington had 12 points. Cornesha Jones had nine points and Zia Shields added eight.
Kemper Co. boys 102, NHS 76
The Tigers started slow, as the Wildcats used a steady supply of offense to take a 26-point win.
Kemper jumped out to a 30-10 lead and outscored Newton 22-20 in the second to lead 52-30 at the half. Newton outscored Kemper 23-22 in the third as Kemper led 75-50 going to the fourth. Kemper took the fourth 28-23 for the final margin.
Kedrick Osby an Rayvion Nettles each had 13 points while Darrius Thames, Jaylen Barton and Cahden Thompson each had 11 points apiece. Kezarrian Wash also chipped in 10 points.
